Caring For Each Other
Hand-crafting arts has provided a rich legacy and we depend on artisans every day to inspire us, reflect our values, evoke emotions and carry on traditions.
Many professional artisans live day to day without a sizable personal "rainy day" fund to draw on should they be faced with a disaster. Named for two Saturday Market craftspeople, the Kareng Fund was founded in 2003 as an emergency relief fund to help artisans and their families. The Kareng Fund has given more than $50,000 in grants to nearly one hundred artisans.

  • Heridas, accidentes o enfermedades
  • Crisis de area de trabajo
  • Perdida de herramientas
  • Problemas con el vehiculo

The Kareng Fund Response to Covid-19 – Emergency Grants
The current global pandemic has put thousands of Oregon artisans in severe financial jeopardy, especially those that rely solely on income from public events like markets and fairs to survive. The Kareng Fund’s limited financial resources are woefully inadequate to deal with the potential demand created by this situation. We know that many are trying to cope and survive by filing for elusive public sector benefits, strengthening efforts around online commerce opportunities, and other efforts driven by  the powerful entrepreneurial spirit of the self-employed. For the duration of this crisis, the Kareng Fund is able to offer limited grants of $250 to artisans affected by the absence of their usual markets. Low-income artisans can access this grant by completing the online application on this website (see below) and indicating “Covid-19” in the Crisis Description section and “Loss of income” in the Financial Needs section. We realize that this grant is only of limited, short term emergency assistance. We encourage applicants to fully explore additional assistance from the following sources:
Oregon Employment Department – The CARES Act - As long as a person’s unemployment is connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, temporary benefits can be made available to self-employed individuals, independent contractors, and “gig” economy employees. They also will be eligible to receive the additional $600 weekly Pandemic Unemployment Compensation.
